Abstract

A special service (muvekithana) for the calculation of the sharp time for praing the daily prayers, was founded by Gazi Husrev-bey's vakuf in 1859. The sharp time could be read from the lunar clock-tower of this vakuf. The author of the article describes how the time was calculated by the means of rub'tahta (astrolabium) at first, and later on by the means of the sextant. By the means of the both instruments the daily height of the Sun was measured and according to it the time for the daily prayers was fixed.
