Abstract

This work deals with how Mula Mustafa Bašeskija marked the time in his notes about events in Bosnia in the second half of the 18th century. The inspiration for this work was found in the introductory sentence in which the author states his intention to „to record events and their times in his medžmua“.

Mula Mustafa marked the time by using precise dates. But dates were not standardized but shaped according to different calendars of methods of measuring time. The author focused on the Islamic lunar calendar and Ottoman lunisolar calendar, according to the movement of the sun in relation to 12 stars and according to natural yearly cyles, then according to Muslim and Christian holidays. Finally, the author occassionally used local terms for the months of the year. These diverse ways of marking time reflected the culture which was symbolized by diversity.
